Welkom op mijn website. Click gewoon wat rond als je voorbeelden van mijn werk als striptekenaar en illustrator wilt zien. Het meeste vertegenwoordigt mijn huidige werk, hier en daar is ook wat ouder werk te zien dat ik van belang acht voor de ontwikkeling van mijn tekenwerk. Mocht er wat nieuws zijn te vertellen over mijn strips of illustraties dan zal ik dat hier op de hoofdpagina plaatsen en indien mogelijk zal ik in de toekomst af en toe een strip (voor) publiceren.

Al sinds een week uit: De Zombie Tales-trade paperback volume 2, "Oblivion", een
verzameling van de eerste vier Zombie Tales afleveringen waarin dus ook opgenomen het
gedeeltelijk door mij getekende verhaal "Zaambi" (zie eerdere berichten).
22.10.08 | Storm
Nog niet zo lang geleden werd bekend gemaakt dat Willem Ritstier (als schrijver)
en ik voor de Don Lawrence Collection een tweede team voor de productie van Storm
hebben gevormd. Daarbij hou ik me bezig met het visualiseren en uitwerken van
Willem's tekst in potlood. Nog niet bekend was hoe mijn potloodpagina's omgezet
zouden worden in schilderwerk a la Don Lawrence. Bij het eerste team werkt Jorg
de Vos op de klassieke manier de schetsen van Romano Molenaar uit tot geschilderde
pagina's. Maar daar gaat al zijn tijd in zitten en een vergelijkbaar talent
vinden bleek een onmogelijke opgave. Er waren echter al diverse experimenten
gedaan met een aantal digitale inkleurstudio's en uiteindelijk bleek er daar
één, gevestigd in China, bij te zitten, die bij de eerste proefpagina een heel
behoorlijk resultaat wist te bereiken. Klik op de afbeeldingen voor een vergrote versie.
Het moest hier en daar wat bijgeschaafd en verfijnd worden en uiteraard
werkten ze op materiaal waarbij ik ook eerst nog mijn draai moest zien te
vinden maar toen ze uiteindelijk met de poster die ik inmiddels voor een
mogelijke aankondiging had gemaakt aan de slag gingen begon er schot in te
komen. In de eerste instantie waren we wat teleurgesteld maar toen bleek dat
we alleen maar een opzet ter keuring te zien kregen. Kleine plaatjes uit die
opzet zijn ook te zien op de website van de Don Lawrence Collectie bij het
nieuwsbericht over het tweede team. Uiteindelijk kregen we een compleet
uitgewerkte versie en vanaf dat moment werden we echt enthousiast. Hier is een
detail van Roodhaar waaraan is te zien hoezeer geprobeerd is de toets van
Don Lawrence te benaderen. Klik op afbeelding.
Die toets is op het computerscherm door de grootte van de poster moeilijk te
tonen maar hier is de poster zoals hij is uitgewerkt. Maar de teksten en
mededelingen daarop zijn alleen nog maar fictief en moeten niet als definitief
worden beschouwd. Vergelijk hem ook eens met de potloodschets die hier eerder
was te zien (nieuwsbericht van 14.6.08). Klik op afbeelding.
Ondertussen zijn we met de pagina's in potlood al aardig op weg.
05.10.08 | Nicky Saxx DeLuxe
Afgelopen weekend zijn de luxe edities van de eerste twee Nicky Saxx (Bee Dee, verhalen 13
t/m 16) albums verschenen in een beperkte oplage van 150 stuks (genummerd en gesigneerd). De
uitgaves zijn verzorgd door Rob de Houter en zien er luxer/verzorgder uit dan de hardcover
uitgaves van de eerste zes delen die eerder verschenen bij uitgeverij Boumaar(verhalen 1
t/m 12. Binnen afzienbare tijd zullen ook deel 3 & 4 (met daarin de verhalen 17 t/m 20)
verschijnen.
20.09.08 | Zombie Tales #4 'Zaambi' besprekingen
Naast de bespreking op Newsarama en het interwiew met de schrijvers op Comic Book
Recources heeft mijn Comic-debuut heeft behoorlijk wat goede reacties opgeleverd in
de VS. Hier volgt een aantal uittreksel uit de besprekingen tot nu toe:
-Along with the great storytelling aspect, the dialogue, and descriptions of the scenes,
everything flows perfectly with this style of story. On top of all of that we also have a
great team of artists that deliver us an old school look that goes along with this issue
perfectly. So once again another great anthology piece put out there by Boom Studios.

-The three artists, Hardman, Oosterveer, and Ho, bring distinct styles which, nevertheless,
mesh so flawlessly that there are no obvious interruptions between chapters. Chris Peter's
subtle and consistent colors contribute heavily to this sense of visual integrity. The
combined effect is reminiscent of Tommy Lee Edwards' current work on Marvel 1985, which
is a fair compliment.

-One of the marks of a great writer is brevity. The Morgan brothers certainly have that.
There are a bundle of great, blood soaked ideas in this stand-alone issue, but the story
never comes across as overwhelming or convoluted. It’s tight scripting with descriptive
narration, and an ending that I didn’t see coming, but one that works beautifully. The
artists, namely Gabriel Hardman, Minck Oosterveer and Jason Ho have very similar styles.
Having three artists in less than thirty pages is usually jarring, but BOOM! have chosen
these three well. They all sketch in a rough fashion reminiscent of Joe Kubert or Lee
Weeks, perfectly complimented by Cris Peter’s muted colours and Marshall Dillon’s subtle
calligraphic lettering. I was gladly surprised by the effective crafting of this
adventure. Zombies in an ancient eastern setting is a concept I haven’t seen before,
and with its “I Am Legend” one man’s POV against the world vibe it’s a perfect fit.

-What was my impression of this? Well, there were times when I went "Wait, that doesn't
make sense." and later get it slapped back in my face and I go "Oooooohhhhh..... well that
explains it... touchè Mr. Chris (Wanted) Morgan". So my attempts to find any flaws in this
comic failed, and I did find that I liked this story. In an age where Zombie tales, pun
intended, are getting more numerous you can go through a bunch and not find one that
brings something original to the table without resorting to gimmicks like 'Zombies Versus
Martians Versus The Kremlin Ballet Theatre Ensemble' this one did indeed do that. This
is a very serious zombie comic, that treats both the threat of re-animated dead and the
whole concept of zombies with respect.

Indeed, every Part of this story presents surprising plot twists, scenes of bloody
violence, and moments of heart-warming, human tenderness. The many unexpected and
well-developed depths in this book make it one I’d like to see reprinted in a hardbacked
edition and placed on the shelves of libraries. This is one comic book that truly deserves
to be treated as a serious piece of literature.

Previously contributed to by creative forces such as Mark Waid and Steve Niles, the next
installment of the Zombie Tales series comes to your stores soon. Zombie Tales #4 is
penned by Christopher Morgan, co-writer of Salem: Queen of Thorns and screenwriter of
Wanted as well as his brother Terry Morgan. Zombie Tales publisher BOOM! Studios is
known for having a strong hold on the horror comic genre, especially with its Cthuhu
titles.
This edition covers a span of 261 years, as we experience the story of Toshiro Hiraoka,
a soldier defending his family and community from millions of zombies taking over the
world, beginning with Japan and moving westward, leaving death and destruction in their
wake. And of course, creating more and more zombies. Or "the zaambi," as they are
referred to through out the chapters.
We first meet Toshiro as a young boy, as he trains and tests to join the guild of men
defending their people. The first chapter introduces us to his father and the
characterization of their relationship is a strong story element through the rest
of the chapters. As the chapters progress, the full effects of the zaambi, as well
as the dangers of other mortals with less than beneficent intent are clear as the
soldiers continue to lose loved ones and members of their own group.
Peter's coloring and Dillon's lettering tie together the chapters of this book
seamlessly. While each chapter does have its own art style-- all of the chapters
heavily reflect a traditional Japanese style. Hardman's drawings invoke a wood
cut block style, Oosterveer's chapter opening landscape is reminiscent of one of
Katsushika Hokusai's classic works, and Ho's lines look as if they could
have been produced with a calligraphy brush. The story flows well, through
panels that sometimes mimic the pattern of shoji screens, rich colors, and
well balanced segments of dialogue followed by action scenes.
For those that are a fan of the genre, or want to learn more about the series, earlier
this summer BOOM! Studios launched a web comic feature on their website releasing many
of their popular titles at a rate of one page per day, including the first installment
of the Zombie Tales series.
This fourth segment of the continuing series is well worth a look. It's a fresh look
at a popular genre. The unique art style, combined with the well developed story
continuing through the chapters makes this a book you'll read in one sitting, but
likely go back to savor in time.

Mijn debuut in de VS is definitief! Oké, ik deed maar één hoofdstuk van 6 pagina's en
een cover maar toch: ZombieTales #4 'Zaambi' is uit... met mijn cover en met die
pagina's. Werk dat ik met ongelooflijk veel plezier heb gedaan vooral dankzij de
samenwerking met mijn editor Matt Cagnon.
Deze cover is van mijn hand. Dat is de Japanse zombie met het knotje die ik hier al
eerder liet zien:

31.07.08 | ZombieTales #4 in kleur
Mijn pagina's voor
ZombieTales #4 zijn ingekleurd! En hoe! In een zwierige, luchtige
aquarelachtige stijl die heel goed past bij de snelle zwart-wit penseel
stijl die ik voor het tekenen heb gebruikt. Het roept volledig de sfeer
op van oude Chinese en Japanse prenten zoals ook was bedoelt. De inkleuring
is gedaan door de Braziliaanse
Cris Peter en we zullen zeker meer van haar werk zien.
07.07.08 | Nicky Saxx
Vanaf 5 juli siert Nicky Saxx een half jaar lang het uiterlijk van de website van
'De Stripspeciaalzaak',
de Vlaamse overkoepelende online-organisatie van 49 stripspeciaalzaken in Vlaanderen en
Nederland. Het verhaal achter de illustratie: Het laatste avontuur van Nicky Saxx eindigt
met het tot ontploffing brengen van een geheime raketbasis op de bodem van de zee waarbij
Nicky Saxx niet meer bovenkomt. Wat mij betreft is dat nog niet het einde. Ik ga er van
uit dat ze is aangespoelt op een onbewoond eiland en daar zit te wachten tot iemand haar
weer terugvindt.

Dit is de cover die ik tekende voor ZombieTales #4, uitgegeven door BOOM!-studios.
De inkleuring is van Andrew Dalhouse. Daarnaast tekende ik de pagina's voor het tweede
hoofdstuk van dit verhaal. Meer informatie vind je hier. Je kunt daar ook bijhouden wanneer de comic in de winkel ligt.
18.06.08 | Hardcover Nicky Saxx
In Valkenswaard zal de hardcover versie van het eerste deel (Noodweer) van 'De avonturen van
Nicky Saxx' ( de Bee Dee-albums dus) uitkomen. Hier het plaatje dat op de luxe-kaft zal
komen.
14.06.08 | Storm!
Het nieuws is nu nogal onverwacht naar buiten gebracht: Met schrijver Willem
Ritstier zal ik een tweede team gaan vormen voor Storm, naast het team van Romano
Molenaar, Jorg de Vos en Martin Lodewijk. Ik zal me, net als Romano, bezig gaan
houden met de uitwerking van de pagina's in potlood. Er wordt nog gekeken wie de
inkleuring gaat doen.
